Where to Eat in Telluride, Colorado

Telluride and the surrounding mountain areas are a magnificent place, and exploring all its beauty can really build up an appetite. Luckily the town offers a variety of delicious and unique dining experiences all can enjoy.

If you find yourself out and about in the early morning, you are sure to encounter the heavenly scent coming from Baked in Telluride. They offer a variety of different baked goods such as muffins, cookies, breads, bagels, sandwiches and they are famous for their raised crumb donuts.  It is quick, easy and perfect for on the go. I recommend getting there early because everything is baked fresh and things go quickly. Baked in Telluride recently reopened in June after a catastrophic fire destroyed the shop, and as a testament to how good it is, there was a line waiting for them to reopen at 5:30. Another great place for breakfast is Maggie’s Bakery & Café. The shop is pretty small with oak tables and antique cookie jars. The menu is traditional and includes fresh baked bread and fruit, a variety of coffee drinks and the carrot cake muffins are the best in town.

When hunger strikes again try the local favorite, family owned, Floradora Saloon, it is reminiscent of an old mining town saloon, with wood walls and a rustic bar topped with aged copper. The diversity of the menu is an unprecedented surprise for a traditional saloon.  The meals are created from natural and organic ingredients found within the area. There is a surplus of dishes served with duck, all creating a unique twist on classic favorites. Floradora Saloon is also famous for their tasty burgers topped with anything from sweet potato spreads to caramelized onions and avocado.  Or if you’re in the mood for pizza, Brown Dog Pizza has been voted the best in town and in September 2011 Brown Dog Pizza placed second at the American Pizza Championships.  This comfortable joint is a great place to watch the game as they have many flat screens throughout the restaurant. Their menu consists of a comprehensive variety of thin-crust, gluten free pizzas and deep dish varieties such as the Detroit Square Pizza, their award winning pizza, which is a must try when in Telluride.

For a delicious end to the day 221 South Oak is the ideal setting for a relaxing evening in a romantic setting. The historic building is walking distance from the Gondola. The inside of the restaurant is open and light, decorated with beautiful paintings on the wall. Outside the large patio offers a spectacular view of the mountains on those warm summer nights. For dinner the cuisine is “New American” with beef, poultry, seafood and a complete vegetarian menu.  While in the morning’s 221 South Oak serves a delicious brunch, featuring poached eggs with soft sell crab, praline bacon and hollandaise served on English muffins. The meal is freshly prepared with local ingredients, to ensure the best taste and experience. Remember to reserve a table in the winter season and check to see if they are running their Tuesday night specials.

A Local’s Guide to the Vail Valley

When coming to Vail, Colorado on vacation there are a few things everyone must do.  Here is my local’s guide to the Vail Valley.  I will tell you where to stay, what to eat and what to do! Having spent a lot of time here I know my intimate knowledge of the Valley will not only benefit you on your next ski vacation in Colorado it will truly enhance it.

You can’t come to Vail if you don’t have a place to stay.  So, here are my recommendations.  Vail is considered one of the original luxury ski vacation towns in Colorado, so I suggest you stay at one of the many beautiful luxury rental homes we offer.  I, personally, love the Gore Creek Place; this amazing five-bedroom home is walking distance to the Eagle-Bahn Gondola and Vail Ski School.  At the end of the day come home to relax next to the two-story fireplace or hop in the outdoor hot tub and watch the snow fall. Another great lodging option is the Booth Creek Drive home that is hidden amongst the Colorado Mountains.  While providing exclusive privacy this amazing home is only two minutes from Vail Village which is filled with a surplus of shops and restaurants.  After a day of skiing enjoy lounging on the plush couches next to the fireplace while you take in the spectacular views through the floor-to-ceiling windows.  If no one feels like cooking there are many delicious places to eat while vacationing in Vail.

For breakfast venture to Eagle-Vail for a traditional diner breakfast.  Route 6 is known for serving up the best corned beef hash in the Valley.  And make sure to order your potatoes extra crispy.  For a filling and tasty lunch whether you’re taking a break from skiing or just wandering around town Moe’s BBQ is known for whipping up the best “soul food in town.”  The ribs are soft and tender, the chicken is full of flavor and the grits are just like Grandma makes down South.  They do a bargain lunch deal including your entre, side and a drink for under $10.  For dinner I would recommend Montauk, it is a delicious fine-dining restaurant with an expansive seafood and steak menu.  Each dish is served with multiple sauces so you can try a variety of flavors while only having to order one dish.  There are many other fantastic restaurants in the Valley and I have compiled them in a list on our dining guide for you to see.

But of course you didn’t only come to Vail, Colorado to eat you came for all the world-class activities offered here.  The skiing is some of the best in the world.  The wide open bowls, the challenging steeps and the tight trees make this mountain a favorite among many.  But when you need a day away from down-hill skiing I recommend the ice rink in the heart of the Village.  It will remind you of your youthful childhood and the magic of winter.  Take the kids along or a romantic date and enjoy practicing your twirls and enjoy a steaming cup of hot chocolate next to the fireplace afterwards.  And of course no vacation is complete without a souvenir.  Throughout the Villages and the town there are plenty of shops selling everything from ski gear to jewelry to authentic Colorado gifts.  So, take a day and wander around town to find the perfect memento.

Mountain Lodge has partnered with Christy Sports Ski and Snowboard rental shop, to make renting easy and convenient as the store is in the base of the Mountain Lodge. The Mountain Lodge is a pet friendly establishment, so bring everyone along for the trip of a lifetime.

After a long day outside, visit the on-site restaurant, View at Mountain Lodge, here you can sample classic tavern cuisine with a high end flare. The inside of the restaurant has the charm of an old western log cabin and the vaulted 50 foot timber ceilings and the massive fireplace adds a cozy atmosphere. If you come between two and six pm you can enjoy their Après Ski Happy Hour and catch one of your favorite sports teams broadcasted on the flat-screen TVs.

The Magnificent Telluride

Telluride – It will not be the altitude that takes your breath away.

Telluride is one of Colorado’s most breathtaking mountain towns. The first residents of this beautiful town were the Ute Indians. Originally moving to Telluride for the fresh water fishing and warm weather, as Ute is translated as “land of sun.” Later Telluride was made famous as a mining town filled with silver and gold. In 1961 Telluride designated as a National Historic Landmark.

Today Telluride is a modern resort village combining luxury and mountain living. The locals will tell you the same story over and over again; they came for the winter but stayed for the summer and have yet to leave. The 300 days of sunshine create a year-round playground for all ages. In the summer it is ideal for hiking and interactive cultural events. The Bear Creek Falls are magnificent, with a roaring waterfall spanning over 100 feet. Don’t forget your camera, as you are going to want to capture all of the spectacular views. The town hosts a variety of different festivals ranging from the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival to the Free Thursday Night Concerts.

Telluride

In the winter Telluride is a winter wonderland, covered in snow and packed with exciting, outdoor activities. Telluride has been ranked as one of North America’s top ten ski areas by both SKI and Skiing magazines. The activities in the winter include everything from world-class skiing to unique experiences such as dog sledding in the remote mountain terrain.
