3 Great Lodging Picks from Breckenridge, CO

Breckenridge has long been a favorite vacation destination during the winter and summer months. Originally founded as a mining town in the 1850’s, Breckenridge has become one of the most popular mountain resorts in the nation. But what is it that keeps drawing people back to Breckenridge? The quaint mountain town? The great dining options? The great skiing? The convienent lodging? The family friendly activities offered year round? The special events?

I could try to answer this question all day, but in reality, all of these things combine together to make Breckenridge a unique and fun destination:

And while I could write a post on each one of these topics, today we’ll take a look at the convenient lodging.

Breckenridge has become well known for its ski in/ski out and village lodging thru conveniently located properties, friendly family services and great value. Let’s go ahead and check out 1 hotel, 1 condo and 1 home that have helped Breckenridge grow to be one of the best resorts around.

Spring Skiing in Breckenridge

A few Skiers enjoying some Spring Skiing and Blue Skies in Breckenridge

1 (hotel). The Beaver Run Hotel, located at the base of Peak 9, is a great ski in/ski out property for families and groups who want to stay on the mountain. With the Beaver Run Super Chair and Quicksilver Super 6 chair located just outside the hotel, guests have instant access up the mountain. There is also a selection of hiking and biking trails located just outside the door, great for taking in some of the beautiful scenery of the area. Not to mention, the hotel is just minutes from down town Breckenridge, where there are plenty of shops, restaurants and boutiques to keep you busy.

The property has studio to 4 bedroom suites, with a variety of room types to match your needs. The hotel also has a full service restaurant and spa, and equipment rental is on-site. The hotel is also pet-friendly, and offers multiple pet services to make sure your dog has a great vacation too! If you want to stay on the mountain and are looking for convenient hotel accommodations, this is the place to stay.

Beaver Run Hotel and Resort

2 (condo). One Ski Hill Place, Breckenridge’s newest condo property, opened up last year at the base of Peak 8. This prime-time location is great during the summer and winter, as it is located right next to the gondola to town and next to 3 different chair lifts up the mountain. Also located at the base of Peak 8 is Breckenridge’s Gold Runner Coaster, a 2,500 ft coaster that weaves in and out of the trees of Breckenridge. This location simply can’t be beat, and the full spa, aquatic center and restaurants on-site ensure that you don’t even have to leave (even though your should go explore) the residences during your stay.

The property offers studio to 4 bedroom suites, and has a variety of rooms and layouts to fit your needs. Rooms either receive views up the slopes or out towards the continental divide and town of Breckenridge. As with the Beaver Run Hotel, a variety of hiking and biking trails are right outside the door, leaving all of the Breckenridge area open for exploration. This is a great property for those looking for maximum convenience and outstanding amenities.

This cozy bedroom features a queen sized bed and looks out across the valley.

3 (home). Now for the house – 31 Riverwood Drive. 31 Riverwood Drive is located on a 1 acre lot just outside the town of Breckenridge. This magnificent 5 bedroom home has a private hot tub and home theater, not to mention the flat screen televisions and fireplaces throughout the house. Guests may take in relaxing views of the wooded surroundings and ski resort from the private decks, or prepare a feast in the gourmet kitchen. The home is conveniently located on the shuttle route and there is also a private shuttle that will provide door-to-door service in Breckenridge. For a luxurious vacation in Breckenridge, this home is the perfect fit. So bring your group or family out for a vacation to be remembered!

One Ski Hill Place in Breckenridge: Ski in Ski out Luxury at its Finest

Breckenridge, Colorado is home to one of the most popular ski resorts in the nation. The resort has now been around for 50 years, and has become one of the ‘go to’ destinations for mountain-lovers year round. Breckenridge continues to raise the bar for vacationers with state of the art lodging properties, great service and unique events.

Last November, Rock Resorts opened up One Ski Hill Place in Breckenridge—a ski in ski out complex located right at the base of Peak 8. I had the opportunity to stay at One Ski Hill Place last winter, and it was truly an experience. The ridiculously convenient lodge has 3 dining areas, a full spa and pool (my favorite part-complete with indoor/outdoor hot tubs, a steam room, sauna and pool), a bowling alley, private movie screening rooms, a fitness center, and access to 4 chair lifts right outside the door.

One Ski Hill Place

The 3 dining areas include a full service skier restaurant with a grand fireplace, the T-Bar après-ski bar with 40 beers on tap, and a Living Room Café with Slope side Views. The skier restaurant is open for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, and makes for a great place to stop throughout the day. Each of these dining areas are unique to one another, and there is no better place for après ski than right at the base of the mountain. And to go a step further, a selection of menu options can be brought to your door from One Ski Hill Place’s room service.

The lodge is at the center of all the action—the gondola connects to the patio of the lodge, providing guests with access to and from the Town of Breckenridge. And with the ski lifts just outside the door, One Ski Hill Place is truly a ski in ski out property.

The Aquatics Center at One Ski Hill Place

The Indoor Aquatics Center at One Ski Hill Place

One Ski Hill Place provides studio to 4 bedroom condos, offering a variety of options for any group size. The units have the option of a “slope side” view (facing the mountain) or a “Continental Divide” view (facing the Continental Divide and looking out over Breckenridge). Both options are great, it just depends on whether you would rather look up the mountain or out over the valley.

A Slope Side Patio View from One Ski Hill Place in Breckenridge

With great views and maximum convenience, the new One Ski Hill Place is a terrific lodge to spend your lunch break, après ski, or your entire vacation. Everything in Breckenridge is at your fingertips from the property, so when booking lodging in Breckenridge don’t forget to mention that you would like to stay at One Ski Hill Place.

Terrain Update 12/21/2011: Aspen, Breckenridge, Copper, Keystone, Vail

Well, it has been a tough week for Colorado–the Rockies have hardly gotten any snow as of late, and there were serious snow storms on the eastern plains halting travel plans and creating danger for travelers. However, it is snowing up here in Vail now, and more snow is expected to be on the way!

Aspen: 24 hr: 0in 72 hr: 5in

Aspen is one of the only mountains in the Colorado Rockies that got snow this week, giving some much needed powder to anxious skiers. The snow helped open up the 560 ft long superpipe, which is one of the many features that will be used in the 2012 Winter X Games.

Breckenridge: 24 hr: 0in 72 hr: 0in

The Dew Tour got of to a great start this past weekend in Breckenridge. Riders killed it in the superpipe and in the Freeway Park. Breckenridge has now opened the park to the public, giving park enthusiasts a chance to ride a truly spectacular course. Also, tomorrow Breckenridge will open Peak 10. With new snow on the way, this is sure to be a great opening day for Peak 10

Copper: 24 hr: 0in 72 hr: 0in

Copper opened up its Rendezvous Lift yesterday, providing access to 15 lifts and 593 acres.

Keystone: 24 hr: 0in 72 hr: 0in

Keystone will be reopening NASTAR today after a brief hiatus due to snow conditions. Check out what Keystone has open on the mountain.

Vail: 24 hr: 0in 72 hr: 0in

While no new runs or lifts have opened at Vail since the last update, they have moved up their opening time from 9 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

So get out there this weekend and enjoy all the new terrain!

Terrain Update 12/9/11: Aspen, Snowmass, Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone

Mountains’ terrain is constantly changing, especially at the beginning of the season. So here’s a quick look at whats going on in the Colorado Rockies this weekend.

Aspen/Snowmass

This weekend, Aspen Highlands will open parts of Highland Bowl, Steeplechase and Temerity. Buttermilk will start its season by opening its Tiehack Express lift on Saturday. This now means that top-to-bottom skiing will be available at the 4 Aspen/Snowmass mountains. This is great news for the area, as the year has gotten off to a slow start. Also, the remodeled Merry-Go-Round on-mountain restaurant will open today at Aspen Highlands **show up from 1-3 for an opening day party!

Breckenridge

Peak 7 opened today at Breckenridge, expanding their terrain to 420 acres out of the available 2,358. While there is still much to be opened at Breckenridge, the opening of Peak 7 is great improvement to the mountain.

Breckenridge Peak 7

Vail

Parts of Game Creek Bowl are set to open today, giving skiers even more access to Vail. While the Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin are still some time away from opening, expanding access to Game Creek Bowl with the Game Creek Express Lift marks the start of a great winter.

Keystone

Keystone’s Main Street Jump Line is set to open this weekend, which often deemed as some of the best jumps in the nation. Pro ski and snowboard teams come to Keystone every year to film and train on these jumps.

Beaver Creek

There are big things going on in Beaver Creek this weekend with the opening of 4 new lifts. Rose Bowl is opening up with a new high speed quad, Upper and Lower Beaver Creek Express will be running. and finally the Riverfront Gondola will be opening. These changes will all take place on Saturday, just in time for a great weekend in the mountains.

Dew Tour in Breckenridge, Colorado

**Stay up to date this weekend with video updates if you can’t make it to the Dew Tour in Breckenridge!

The Winter Dew Tour, founded in 2008, is one of the biggest events of the season for skiers and snowboarders. The Olympics obviously take the cake in terms of importance and level of competition, but they only happen every 4 years. The X-games are the next biggest event, and the Dew Tour falls close behind. The Dew Tour features more of the ‘up and coming’ athletes in skiing and snowboarding, and gives them a chance to make a name for themselves.

Breck Super Pipe

The Dew Tour is unique in that it has 3 stops throughout the winter. The first is at Breckenridge ski resort in Colorado (December 15-18), the second is in Killington, Vermont (January 19-22) and the third is at Snowbasin in Ogden, Utah (February 9-12). The third and final stop typically carries the most importance, since this is where the final results are determined and the gold medals and Dew Cups are awarded. The cup is awarded based on who performs the best on all 3 stops of the tour. This separates out the true warriors who are able to perform at each stop. Coverage of the event throughout the winter will be provided by NBC.

Dew Tour Crowd

A few big names will be competing this year including Shawn White, Louie Vito and Danny Davis in men’s snowboarding and Simon Dumont and Torin Yater-Wallace in men’s skiing. Shaun White is back to reclaim the cup after not competing in last year’s tour, which is sure to make the competition that much more interesting. Check out footage from last year’s Dew Tour to see just how high the stakes go.

So if you come to Breckenridge for the Dew Tour or just to vacation any time of year, be sure to find out more about how our team of Friendly. Knowledgeable. Locals.® can help you plan your customized vacation.

The Kingdom of Breckenridge

The Kingdom of Breckenridge, this was the nickname the locals gave the town of Breckenridge since they were technically off the map. The town of Breckenridge was founded as a mining town in 1859 but was accidentally left off official US maps until 1936. To celebrate that famous mistake and nickname there is the Kingdom Days festival June 17th-19th. This weekend we celebrate the rich heritage that was Breckenridge before the fantastic skiing and snowmobiling, gold mining and the search for wealth.

There are wonderful activities for kids and adults alike! For instance have you ever seen an outhouse fly like the wind? The infamous outhouse races that were once featured on MSNBC’s “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” are hilarious to watch and a lot of fun to participate in. The outhouses are made with cardboard or plastic and have one person riding inside with a helmet on. Free to attend with lots of potential for a good time.

If you would like to learn more about the history of Breckenridge this is a great weekend to learn! Historic tours and other attractions are free for the weekend thanks to the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance. These tours are fun and educational and give a great look into the wild west history of the miners lives and struggles to seek the ever precious metal. The largest gold nugget ever found was actually right here in Breckenridge at 13.5 pounds.

Kingdom Days are a great way to kick off the summer. Lodging rates are a steal and the weekend promises fun for the whole family without breaking the bank of a big vacation. There are great deals are all over town from dining to shopping. Everyone will have a great time and might accidentally learn a few things too!

Ozomatli is coming to Breck!

Breckenridge Colorado Live Music

Guess what!? This Sunday Ozomatli will be in Breckenridge playing for FREE! It’s spring time here in the valley and that means a lot of free concerts. We just finished a series of Bud Light concerts in Vail but wait it’s not completely over. Now the Bud Light concert series has moved on to Breck and they have a great line up: Wailers, Devotchka, and Ozomatli to name a few.

Being a huge Ozo fan I’m super excited about them performing here in Colorado and for FREE. This band is high energy all the time, I don’t remember ever going to one of their concerts (yes I’ve been to several) and not danced the whole time they’re on stage. People that get to see them for the first time get hooked and become Ozo fans instantly. At least that’s been my experience with the people I’ve taken to the concert with me.

A little about the band (some info from their website): Ozomatli is an LA-based group with a great live presence, brewing a vital concoction of Latin salsa, urban hip-hop, and jazz-funk. Notorious urban-Latino-and-beyond collision of hip hop and salsa, dancehall and cumbia, samba and funk, merengue and comparsa, East LA and New Orleans second line, Jamaican ragga and Indian raga— has long followed a key mantra: it will take you around the world by taking you around L.A. They were invited by the U.S. State Department to serve as official Cultural Ambassadors on a series of government-sponsored international tours to Asia, Africa, South America, and the Middle East, tours that linked Ozomatli to a tradition of cultural diplomacy that also includes the esteemed likes of Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and Louis Armstrong.

Ozomatli has spent 15 years working diligently to spread its message of peace, communication and understanding through music, with a long standing tradition of performing for children all over the world, from the schools of North St. Louis to the orphanages of Southeast Asia. 2011 has the band focused on “oZoKidZ”, a special family friendly set geared towards performing for children and adults alike. The band are currently in the studio with acclaimed producer Tony Berg, recording a children’s album for release in 2011, followed by a book, DVD and tour

Indie Films to Inspire in Breckenridge

I love living in the mountains for several reasons – the open space, the pretty landscape, the way people are easy-going, and how there is always so much to do! When the winter winds down and the snow starts to disappear up here in the Rockies, many summer events are already lined up for us all to engage in and enjoy. Among these, one of the top independent Film Festivals will be taking place in June, just down the road from Vail in Breckenridge.

This year will be the 31st annual Breckenridge Film Festival, featuring around 51 independent drama, comedy, spiritual, and documentary films. Additionally, the festival highlights a GLBT Film Series, showcasing diverse subject matter representative of the films’ creators, as well as presenting the audience with meaningful artistic perspective.

Breckenridge is a unique mountain town that offers quirkiness, character, natural beauty, and a youthful vibe. It is rather appropriate that the town of Breck has been a proud host of the indie film fest for so many years. In an article published last year in the Denver publication Westword, writer Amber Taufen stated “the Breckenridge Film Festival is an anomaly. The fest has managed to retain a truly indie vibe throughout its thirty years of existence.”

Now being the 31st celebration of innovation, art, culture, and perspective, the festival should continue to impress this upcoming June. Taking place on the 9th through the 12th, early summer weather in Colorado will permit a truly enjoyable environment for the series. The event is hosted by renowned Film Critic Jeffrey Lyons, and his son Ben Lyons, E!’s own entertainment journalist.

You’ve heard it by many – people come to Colorado for the winter, and stick around Colorado for the summer. Come see what summer in the Rockies is all about, while indulging in the culture of independent film here in Breckenridge. Ticket info. for the event can be found here, and be sure to check out our lodging options for a comfortable stay.

Mountain Mardi Gras Mambo, in Breck

If you are as much of a New Orleans lover as I am, you are probably aware that Mardi Gras is around the corner, and this time of year calls for some Soco-drinking, accordian-playing, bead-throwing, crawfish-eating, and parade-going celebration! Mardi Gras falls on March 8th this year, and Breckenridge is hosting several events in spirit of lettin’ the good times roll!

The first string of festivities starts appropriately on Saturday, well ahead of the Gras. Beaver Run Resort is hosting a Bacchus Ball, where there will be dancing, drinking, traditional New Orleans cuisine, and the crowning of Rex and the Queen. To attend this pre-Mardi Gras Ball, pick up your tickets at the Breckenridge Welcome Center. Tickets are $45 per person, and $85 per couple, which includes a New Orleans style buffet dinner. Additionally, musician Hazel Miller will be playing all night.

More into the idea of attending an event for free? Breckenridge has that part covered. Lundi Gras evening was traditionally my favorite part of the eventful weekend celebration – there is usually a variety of events and concerts going down that lead up to the Zulu Parade on Mardi Gras morning at 8 a.m. In Breckenridge this year, a Lundi Gras Celebration will take place at the Riverwalk Center Amphitheater, featuring BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet, where there will be Hurricanes (the tasty and potent beverage) and full concessions.

On the day of Mardi Gras, don’t miss out on eccentric flavors of the “Taste of Nawlins Picnic” in the Blue River Plaza. Harvest Catering will be offering their talents to indulge attendees with cajun spices and rich southern cookin. Proceeds from the picnic will go to sponsoring Mardi Gras Events for the weekend. Lastly, of course, a Mardi Gras Procession will take place on Main St. at 4:30 pm. If interested in participating, click here.

So if good food, good music, and New Orleans tradition in the picturesque setting of the Rockies sounds like a good time, come out to Breckenridge, for a mountain Mardi Gras Mambo celebration!

21st Annual Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championship

Come to Breckenridge to watch and see how snow sculptures are created! 2011 will mark the 21st annual Budweiser Snow Sculpture Championship in Breckenridge. Sculpting begins at 11:00 am on Tuesday January 25th, 2011 with a gunshot to start and sculpting ends on Saturday January 29th, 2011 at 10:00 am. Artists begin their sculpting around the River Walk Center grounds at 150 West Adams Avenue, Breckenridge, CO.

Friday January 28th is supposed to be the best day to attend this free event. Artists are preparing to stay up all night to detail their work. This year there are 15 teams from eight countries including Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United States.

The snow for the sculptures is made by the Breckenridge Ski Resort and dumped into trucks to be taken down to the site. Once the snow is on site it is blown into blocks and volunteers called “snow stompers” climb on the piles and stomp the snow and then more snow is blown on top. The snow sculptures are approximately 20 tons and each team’s sculpture is 10 feet wide, 10 feet long, by 12 feet high.  To create these amazing sculptures the artists are only allowed to use hand tools and power tools are not allowed.

Judging beings at 10:00 am on Saturday January 29th, 2011 and the award ceremony is at 3:30 pm on Sunday January 30th, at this time there will be an award for People’s Choice, Kid’s Choice, and the judges will pick their top three choices.

First Day Out of the Season!

This weekend was my first day on the mountain of the season! It could not have been a better weekend to get my legs warmed up and ready for the long season ahead.  Ready to get back into skiing I could not have been more excited to start in the Rockies.  Used to the east coast slopes that are full of ice and short runs it was quit a treat to start skiing out west.

Saturday I started out in Breckenridge anxious because I have skied Breck before and absolutely loved the great views, awesome slope bars, and mountain of course.  It could not have been a more perfect day to start.  Semi long lines starting at Peak 8, we moved our way over to Peak 9 where we skied most of the day.  Less crowded we got in a lot of runs, and although it hadn’t snowed in a few days it was a great to day be on mountain.   Sunny with blue skies my first day out this season could not have been any better!

With the snow starting to fall in the valley late Saturday night I knew that Sunday was going to be a great powder day.  Although tired after my first day out on the mountain my roommate graciously woke me up early to get a head start on the slopes. Still snowing in the morning, it was a cold yet awesome day!  We decided to hit up Beaver Creek, excited to check it out because I have never skied there before and I have only heard great things.

Beaver Creek did not disappoint. With fresh powder and the snow still coming down the conditions were great and the lines were short.  With my lack of experience skiing powder it was definitely a learning day for me.  I decided that I unquestionably need a new pair of goggles for the snowy conditions out in the Rockies.  Skiing fresh powder was so enjoyable and it felt like a completely different sport.  With great guides we navigated most of the mountain, which was awesome experiencing all the different runs that Beaver Creek had to offer. I am definitely excited to get more powder days in this season and improve!

I would have to say two of my favorite features of Beaver Creek were definitely the escalators at the lodge (best idea ever) and of course the complementary chocolate chip cookies (which were awesome) given out ever day around 3:00. Perfect ending to a great day on the mountain!

Ski, Ski, Ski!

After a long Thanksgiving weekend of skiing, I was so tired and sore I was actually looking forward to the workweek to come! My brother came out to visit from San Francisco. It was his first trip to Colorado to ski and he was not disappointed. The weeklong trip was nonstop; we definitely covered our bases. We skied at Vail, Beaver Creek and Breckenridge, and broke up the week with a snowmobiling trip.

We were lucky enough to be a Beaver Creek for their Opening Day.  I’m sure you’ve seen the video posted by our videographerTyler Boyd of his Opening Day adventures.  If not, you’re missing out.  After a long week of continuously falling snow, the conditions at Beaver Creek were epic with plenty of fresh powder to shred.

We skied and snowboarded at Vail, and new lifts kept opening every day.  Blue Sky Basin will be opening this week, so shredders rejoice!  The great thing about Vail is that it is so expansive that you can ride all day without hitting the same trail twice if that’s your prerogative.

Breckenridge is one of my favorite places to ski.  I was there for Opening Day earlier this month, and this past visit was even better as a lot more lifts and terrain were open.

We started out on the trails...

Snowmobiling was a completely new experience for us. I moved here mainly for the skiing; snowmobiling was just an added bonus. We went on a trip with Nova Guides and they provided us with everything we expected. After an exhausting two hour tour, we hit their quaint lodge for some much needed relaxation and a complimentary cup of hot chocolate. I would definitely recommend snowmobiling to anyone looking for a thrill; not only do you get to hit the trails, you drive straight up the mountain to the Top of the Rockies, to enjoy spectacular views that go on for miles.
