The Best Time You’ll Have This Summer… Teva Mountain Games

The Summer Teva Mountain Games held in Vail, Colorado is pretty much one of the coolest events held all summer.  The Games combine athletes, art, and music, all in the beautiful mountain setting of Vail, Colorado.  This year’s event will kick off May 31 and conclude June 3, 2012.  So I’d like to let you know why the Teva Mountain Games are at the top of my summer hit list.

1) Swag!  Who doesn’t love free stuff?  At the Teva Mountain Games, free is pretty easy to come by.   Being a respected and well established event has its perks when it comes to attracting Sponsors. Whether is free stickers, socks, or Chipotle burritos, – there is swag to be had!  At Teva, the vendors’ line up tents throughout Vail Village, which is better known as “Gear Town”.  Gear Town attracts really cool companies who are there to educate and introduce their products to like-minded consumers.  In fact, I’ve discovered some really cool companies through Gear Town over the years!

Dirty Heads Concert at Teva 2011

2)  Free Music!
The Vail Valley Foundation never disappoints when it comes to booking amazing artists to perform for free during the event.  Last year at the Teva Mountain Games The Dirty Heads and Xavier Rudd both put on amazing shows!  Organizers haven’t released the line-up for this year’s event yet, but I’m confident that when they do, it will be something to look forward to.

3)   Amazing athletes
No matter what event you find yourself at during the Games, you’re going to have a good time.  Athletes come from around the globe to compete in kayaking, rock climbing, mountain biking, rafting, and much more during the Games.  There are even competitions for our little furry friends in Golden Peak.  Last year our office dog Aussie got a taste of the action in the Duck Dogs Competition.

4)      Participate!
You don’t have to be a professional athlete to engage in some friendly competition at the Teva Mountain Games.  There is a 10k, Vail Pass Marathon and Mud Run among other events that anyone can register for.  Last year me and a few girls I work with did the Mud Run and has a blast and half!

Lodging in Vail comes in a great price during the summer months.  I recommend calling one of our Destination Specialists today to learn more about the Teva Mountain Games and secure a place to stay!

Lionshead Centre Condominiums in Vail’s Lionshead Village

When it comes down to it, the location of the lodging property you select to spend your week long vacation in can either make or break your vacation experience. Personally, when I’m planning a ski vacation location is everything.  I want to be steps from the lifts (if not ski-in/ski-out), close to restaurants, shopping and of course the nightlife.  On my ideal vacation, nothing is too far away and your “home” is always just a quick walk away.  There is nothing I appreciate more than being able to ski my heart out and retreat effortlessly to my condo when I decide that my body needs a rest.  Once I’ve spent some time by the fire rejuvenating, in an instant I can be back on the lifts.  If this sounds like your kind of vacation, then look no further than Lionshead Centre Condominiums for your Vail lodging needs.

During the evening on November 25th, head over to Beaver Creek to attend the 31st annual Christmas Tree Lightning and 7th annual Gingerbread Competition.

During Christmas season many towns slow down and close businesses. Not Vail. The town is decorated with colorful glowing lights and evergreens, while nature provides stunning mountains covered in sparkling snow by day and glittering stars in the sky by night. One picture perfect way to experience the natural beauty of the area is with a horse-drawn carriage ride. During the scenic ride you can crawl under a warm blanket or enjoy a cup of hot chocolate.

During the winter there are plenty of events and activities to keep guests busy. Guests can visit the spa for a relaxing day, hit the slopes for great skiing, build a snowman, go on a scenic snowshoe hike, go ice skating or go ski biking. If you visit from December 5th-11th, be sure to attend Snow Daze and if you visit from December 18th-25th, you can take part in Vail Holidaze.

If I Could Stay Somewhere…I Would Stay Here

The first time I went to the Sebastian in Vail, Colorado last winter, it was to attend a dinner/presentation in one of their ballrooms downstairs. While the concierge gave me great directions to the ballroom, I decided that I would take an alternate route in order to explore the hotel and its amenities.

From the second I stepped into the hotel, I knew it was a special place. I knew that by deviating from the employee’s direction I would find all that the hotel had to offer, and perhaps discover some secret areas. And while I didn’t find any ‘secrets’ per se, I did find a few areas of the hotel that caught my eye by surprise.

The first place I stumbled upon was the library. The room and décor were fascinating; it looked like a great place to read a book, play some cards or just kick back and relax. But if you really wanted to relax, perhaps the Bloom Spa would be a better option. I am not exactly the spa type, but this spa seemed very inviting. The smells coming from and the design of the spa put my mind at ease—I can’t imagine what a massage would have done. I continued my escapade on to discover not 1 but 2 restaurants in the hotel.

The first restaurant was more of a café and was called “Market”. They offered a light menu:  sandwiches, to-go lunches, grab and go specials, coffee and seasonal wines. I could imagine myself sleeping in on vacation and shooting on down to Market for a breakfast sandwich and some coffee. Not far from Market was Block 16 restaurant. This is the main restaurant of the hotel that offers seasonal dishes made with fresh and local ingredients. The restaurant also had a large selection of wine to compliment any meal. If hunger strikes and you do not want to visit Market or Block 16 for a meal, your options are far from over.

Aside from in-room dining, where you can have made to order meals from both Market and Block 16, there are a number of restaurants within minutes of the hotel. One of my favorites, La Bottega, is located less than a minute from the Sebastian and has some of the best sandwiches in town. They also have a full dining menu, but I have only gotten their sandwiches….they’re just that good! There is Osaki’s Sushi & Japanese just next door, and across the street is the Swiss Chalet Restaurant. If you didn’t hike or ski too hard and you can muster up the energy for a 5-7 minute walk, there are a number of various restaurants down on Gore Creek Dr. After your meal, it might not be a bad idea to find your way back to Frost, a bar located in the Sebastian.

Frost was in a cool room, and definitely seemed like a place where I could relax and have a drink. Or two. Or three or……more. It could also be a place where I could go at night for a livelier bunch. But I could not get distracted—I had an event to attend. After weaving my way through the hotel again, attempting to retrace my steps through the spacious hallways, I arrived at the ballroom (fashionably late thanks to my detour) and had a delicious meal. While I did not stay a night at the Sebastian, I was able to warm up, try some of the food, and see what the Sebastian was all about. My thumbs are pointing up.

Greetings, Sled God…

The Sustainable Art Sled photo by

The Town of Vail will be exhibiting wooden sleds decorated by local artists and will be on view in various locations throughout Vail Village. The first ever Invitational Art Sled Exhibition will promote sustainability, creativity, recreation and community. Want to buy one of the sleds on exhibit? Well you’re in luck! At the end of the exhibit the sleds will be sold in a silent auction and a portion of the proceeds will help fund art programs in Vail.

Exhibit opens this President’s Day weekend. They will be on exhibit in: Claggett Rey Gallery, Cogswell Gallery, Masters Gallery, Pismo Gallery, Vail Fine Art Gallery, Vail International Gallery, Vail Village Arts, Worth Interiors, The Colorado Ski & Snowboard Museum and the Vail Public Library. For details on the visit Art in Vail.

Want to go sledding now huh? Well check out Ellefson Park in Vail. It’s Vail’s most popular sledding hill (from what I’ve heard). The park is not crowded at all, there are table settings for you to eat or take a break. Here are some easy directions: Take the West Vail exit from I-70. (If traveling on I-70 E, cross under the I-70 on Chamonix Road). In the round-about, take the Chamonix Road. Left on Chamonix Lane. Left on Arosa Drive. Right on Garmisch Drive.

Want to do even MORE stuff around Vail? Ask one of our friendly, knowledgeable, locals at Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals for suggestions on even more things to do and all your lodging needs while you’re out here.

The Snow Ball is Growing!

The Snow Ball Music Festival has the powers of impressing me every day.  It must be some magic wizard.  Announcing artists daily keeps me intrigued, as if Bassnectar and Pretty Lights weren’t enough.  The way the acts are being announced I think its genius and accidental, but all good things happen for a reason.  I keep going to the website and social networks everyday to check on updates waiting for my mind to be blown, and they are doing a great job.  As acts are still being signed, it is exciting to watch this wonderful idea grow daily.

On January 13, I was impressed again with the announcement of Brother Ali to the concert poster along with a few other announcements and the growth of free spaces on the poster!  I saw Brother Ali opening for Bassnectar earlier this year, so it’s great to see them together again at the same festival.  Brother Ali must enjoy the dance music.  More spaces mean more acts and I thought 29 was a large amount, but now there are 44 spots on the line-up.  With the addition of Brother Ali to the Snow Ball, I expect to see another act added to the line-up – Mimosa. He opened for Pretty Lights at Red Rocks this summer, and I recently saw him play a great show at Agave in Avon.  I would love to see him again especially in a festival atmosphere.

I only have one problem with this: the third headliner.  Who will it be? I have been waiting eagerly and I don’t want to wait anymore.  I have heard rumors that DeadMau5 might be playing at the Snow Ball, but would he be the third headliner?  I for one wouldn’t want that, but seems to be a good fit.  I think the third headliner shouldn’t be electronic – a lot of genres are coming to the Snow Ball, and it would be healthy to have some diversity.  I’d like to see a hip-hop act, like Atmosphere  or maybe something old school.  Whoever it may be, I’m sure everyone will be stoked regardless of who it is.  I can’t wait to see.

If you are planning on attending the Snow Ball Music Festival contact Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals for your lodging needs.

The Snow Ball Is Coming

Ski, Ski, Ski!

After a long Thanksgiving weekend of skiing, I was so tired and sore I was actually looking forward to the workweek to come! My brother came out to visit from San Francisco. It was his first trip to Colorado to ski and he was not disappointed. The weeklong trip was nonstop; we definitely covered our bases. We skied at Vail, Beaver Creek and Breckenridge, and broke up the week with a snowmobiling trip.

We were lucky enough to be a Beaver Creek for their Opening Day.  I’m sure you’ve seen the video posted by our videographerTyler Boyd of his Opening Day adventures.  If not, you’re missing out.  After a long week of continuously falling snow, the conditions at Beaver Creek were epic with plenty of fresh powder to shred.

We skied and snowboarded at Vail, and new lifts kept opening every day.  Blue Sky Basin will be opening this week, so shredders rejoice!  The great thing about Vail is that it is so expansive that you can ride all day without hitting the same trail twice if that’s your prerogative.

Breckenridge is one of my favorite places to ski.  I was there for Opening Day earlier this month, and this past visit was even better as a lot more lifts and terrain were open.

Photo - Snowmobiling

We started out on the trails...

Snowmobiling was a completely new experience for us. I moved here mainly for the skiing; snowmobiling was just an added bonus. We went on a trip with Nova Guides and they provided us with everything we expected. After an exhausting two hour tour, we hit their quaint lodge for some much needed relaxation and a complimentary cup of hot chocolate. I would definitely recommend snowmobiling to anyone looking for a thrill; not only do you get to hit the trails, you drive straight up the mountain to the Top of the Rockies, to enjoy spectacular views that go on for miles.

Photo - Top of the Rockies

and made it to the top of the world!

Whenever you choose to make a trip to the Rockies this winter, make sure to give Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals a call. Our new full time concierge, Morgan, will give you the local scoop on all off-mountain activities to be had during your stay. These include fine dining, snowshoeing and snowmobiling, to name a few.

VAIL OPENING DAY

Get ready for Opening Day, mountain enthusiasts: it’s…  TOMORROW.

Nine lifts are announced to be open, including Avanti Express Lift (2), Wildwood Express Lift (3), Moutaintop Express Lift (4), Game Creek Express Lift (7), Born Free Express Lift (8), Northwoods Express Lift (11), Little Eagle Lift (15), Vista Bahn Express Lift (16, at the base in Vail Village), and of course, the Eagle Bahn Gondola (19, located in Lionshead).

closing day vail

Opening Day to Replace Closing Day!

The mountain will be open at 9 in the morning, and both Lionshead and Vail Village will be offering $1 breakfast burritos, complimentary hot cocoa, Muscle Milk samples, and plenty of giveaways.  Garfinkle’s in Lionshead is hosting an “Opening Day Bash” where a DJ will be spinning along with plenty of food and drink specials, going on from 1 to 3 p.m.  I, on the other hand, will be slinging y’all beers at the Red Lion in Vail Village, and the party over there should be pretty animated as well!

Garfinkle’s bash will lead to the free concert featuring the band Big Gigantic at 3:30 at Vail Square in Lionshead. Also, there will be plenty of music in town throughout the weekend, starting tonight with trance fusion band Yamn at Samana Lounge. A few movie premiers will be shown tonight – “In-Color” by Transworld and “Cheers” by People will be shown at the Burton store in Lionshead, as well as “Light the Wick” by Teton Gravity Research at Sandbar. The Burton event starts at 7, with free food offered by Moe’s BBQ and raffle prizes that include a snowboard and heli trip. At Sandbar, a keg of Colorado Native will be tapped at 9, and another raffle will be giving away a Never Summer snowboard, Liberty skis, and a Loki jacket. Win cool stuff to set the weekend off right!

If you haven’t booked for the weekend already, check out Vail packages with Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals – and get up here!

Top 5 Reasons New Yorkers Love Vail

    1. We’re used to the quick paced energy of big cities and bright lights. Vail’s night life is known to get crazy…crazy in a good way. You can bar hop all night, and be stumbling distance home without having to worry about waking up to the smell of urine, hobos and roasted nuts.
    2. Even though we’re well adapted to the competitive, always-in-a-rush person that will step over you in order to get to where they want to be, Vail is the perfect getaway from the people, attitude, and lifestyle we know so well. From the second you walk off your plane in Denver, you will notice this change in personalities. People are actually friendly! They acknowledge your presence (and even apologize) if they bump into you. They are low-key, mellow, down to earth, and happy to have you visit the place they call home.
    3. Vail is bipartisan (even indifferent) to sports teams. Unlike our visits to “The Cape,” we can enjoy a night out on the town, a relaxing dinner, or a day on the slopes, without the nauseating site of heavy-set dudes with Red Sox gear on everywhere you turn. If the Giants are playing, you can stroll into a local sports bar, grab a beer, and root for your home team whole-heartedly, and with ease of mind.
    4. We New Yorkers Love. Our. Food.  Whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or dinner, we value the times when we can shut off work, school, or our annoying ex, and simply indulge in good company and good food. Vail can accommodate our semi-outrageous eating habits with countless options for grubbing out and getting down. Whether it’s a New York style pie from Vendetta’s, or an Italian hoagie from La Bottega, we’re never short of meals here.
    5. Last but certainly not least: a vacation is a vacation! And let’s face it, every New Yorker needs many more than they inevitably take. There’s a reason why Vail is the number one mountain in the lower 48; it’s the perfect place to curb that everlasting anxiety from our overextended, stress-induced lives. It’s nearly impossible to feel tense after a day on the slopes, après drinks at Garf’s, and an extended hot tub sesh in your own private home.

If you’re a New Yorker in need of a Vail Vacation, contact Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals at 1-888-866-2305 to unwind on the slopes this winter!

This post was brought to you by Connie, a Sales Agent at the Vail/Beaver Creek office. She previously worked for Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals with the Business Development Team, and has returned as a CU graduate, now in the department of sales. She loves Colorado for the fact that people here are down-to-earth, like to spend their time doing quality things, and are thankful to be alive. She is passionate about skiing, hiking, running, and being outside, where the views, “are unbeatable, 365 days a year.” Connie loves talking to people, Italian food, and is really good at poker. She recently graduated from CU Boulder with a degree in English-Literature.

    Heading out West

A month ago I decided it was time to uproot from my home on Long Island and move out west. My college roommate had spent the summer working for Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals in Vail, Colorado and had nothing but great things to say not only about the people he worked with, but also about Vail itself. He told me all about his experiences hiking in Breckenridge, going out in Aspen and camping in Beaver Creek. With his help, I was able to secure an internship with the Business Development Team at Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals. While I’ve only been here a week, I’ve loved every minute of it, from my friendly coworkers to the beautiful surroundings of the Rocky Mountains. This weekend I’m going hiking with friends and I’m counting down the days until I can hit the mountain with my snowboard.

Don’t miss out on all that the Rocky Mountains have to offer. Call Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals at 1-888-866-2305 to book your vacation today! Take advantage of the beautiful fall foliage or book your winter getaway early for peace of mind.

This post was brought to you by Andrew, a member of the Business Development Team, primarily concerned with marketing, the website, and Google Analytics. Having grown up in Long Island and then escaping up to Vermont for college, it’s no surprise that Andrew ventured out to Colorado for the purpose of “getting away.” Andrew spends most of his free time with friends, snowboarding, being outside, and going for runs. He is passionate about making the most of each day, and can most effectively be summed up as “hard-working,” as he values the concept of getting the job done. In addition to playing lacrosse for the University of Vermont, he graduated recently with a degree in both History and Marketing Business Administration.

Colorado’s Secret About Fall Foliage (and How to Enjoy It)

One of the best things about living in the Rocky Mountains is also one of the most overlooked. We all know about the majestic snow capped peaks just waiting to be skied and the gorgeous back country scenery perfect for a relaxing hike. Go ahead and take in the crisp mountain air, but don’t let the fall season in Colorado pass you by. The picturesque views and the crunching of dead leaves beneath your feet, not to mention that distinct Autumn smell, bring you a sense of calm and clarity that seems to come only with life above 8,000 feet.

There's nothing quite like the sight of yellow Aspen trees against a mountain backdrop

The changing of the leaves is one of the most beautiful sites to see in a land that is known for its unbelievable views. I have been to New England in the fall and the entire feeling is just amazing, but when it’s that time of year in the Rockies, the mountains are on fire, figuratively speaking, of course.

So, grab yourself a mug of hot cocoa or, better yet, apple cider, and breathe in: The smell, the green and golden laden views, the gentle sounds of leaves falling and rustling, the sunny warming days, and the cool nights – it all comes together in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. Life was meant to be enjoyed – what better place is there to do just that?

While the changing of the leaves and just the overall feeling of being in the Rockies during this special time of year should be enough to lure you to the mountains for at least a weekend getaway, the pot is sweetened when you take into account the fact that you can view all of this in breathtaking fashion by visiting Vail, Beaver Creek, Keystone, Aspen, and many of the other destinations that Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals offers. It’s no secret that Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals provides unrivaled service in premier destinations throughout Colorado and the rest of the Rocky Mountains, and the fall is no exception. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to enjoy peacoat weather in the Rockies for affordable off-season rates. Visit Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals or call 1-888-866-2305 now to enjoy the fall foliage.

Vail Village & Lionshead Village Oktoberfest

If you’re unable to make it to Oktoberfest in Beaver Creek next weekend, fear not!  Vail will be continuing the party the two following weekends, the 10th-12th and the 17th-19th.  Festivities will take place in Lionshead Village the first weekend, and in Vail Village the second weekend.  Both weekends are sure to be jam-packed with activities, with everything from Bavarian music, to bratwurst, to beer, beer & more beer!  The party kicks off at 5 p.m. on Friday both weekends, so head on over straight after work (or maybe cut out a little early!) to start your weekend off right.  Saturday’s festivities last from 12 p.m. – 5 p.m., and Sunday’s last from 12 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Start practicing your yodeling now, and bring your old alpine horn out of hiding, because both are sure to be prevalent throughout the Fest.  Possibly the most exciting event of all is sure to be the Beck’s Keg Bowling Contest.  Contestants can sign up Saturday and Sunday of each weekend.  What does the contest entail, you ask?  Two chances to push an empty keg strapped to a dolly into a pyramid of six more empty kegs.  Participants with the highest total of fallen kegs will advance to the finals!  Entry is free, and there’s a reward for the winner of the finals, so there’s no excuse not to give it a whirl!

If you’re not up for Keg Bowling, try a lighter fare, the Brat-Eating Contest.  This event is also free, so join eight-ten participants and eat as many brats as you can in three minutes to achieve a full belly and a prize for the winner!  Sign-ups are available on site Saturday and Sunday.

The Oktoberfest Fun Run is the perfect opportunity to stave away your guilt from eating all those brats! The race will take place on Sunday, the 19th, and includes a free commemorative t-shirt for the first 150 registered runners, a 10k, 5k run/walk/blade and kids race, an after party, and awards for the top three overall male and female finishers.  Registration is $20 online and $25 on site.  Participants under 18 are $10 both online and on race day!

To schedule lodging for either weekend, contact Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals at 1-888-866-2305.  If your phone doesn’t work, just yodel as loud as you can!

Herbie Hancock To Perform at Beaver Creek

Herbert Jeffrey a.k.a. “Herbie” Hancock is one of the world’s most influential jazz pianists and composers of all time, and he’s making his first Beaver Creek appearance this Wednesday at the Vilar Performing Arts Center! His stop at the Vilar Center is a part of his “Imagine Project,” a nation-wide tour in honor of Hancock’s 70th birthday.  This is an experience not to be missed. A huge contributor to the “post-bop” era of Jazz, Herbie has performed with everyone from Miles Davis, Buster Williams, and Billy Hart, to Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, and Freddie Hubbard.

For nearly half a century, Herbie Hancock has been changing people’s lives with his progressive sound. Tickets are still on sale at vilarpac.org, and for those of you in the Denver area looking for a place to stay for the night (or for the long weekend?), Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals is offering discounted local rates. Call us to book your lodging for the event at 1-888-866-2305.

Herbie Hancock is one of many amazing artists to play at the Vilar center this summer, including country star Randy Travis, guitarist Jonny Lang, and bluesman Keb’Mo’. Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals can take care of all your vacation planning, including lodging, restaurant reservations, family & adventure packages, and transportation.  We are friendly, knowledgeable, local vacation specialists who love Vail, and want YOU to love it too.  Come check out Herbie Hancock’s performance this Wednesday and see for yourself why we’re proud to call our home “the best place on earth.”

Vail hosts Gourmet on the Gore

Just as the summer winds down, children start going back to school, and the Aspen trees show a golden leaf or two, one of my favorite events in Vail comes to town: Vail’s Gourmet on the Gore.  Hosted in classic Vail Village, with Gore Creek  meandering through, Gourmet on the Gore is an open-air tasting of food, wine, beer and spirits.  This year they’re also pairing food, wine, beer and spirits with live Jazz music.

This year Gourmet on the Gore will be Labor Day weekend, with events happening on Saturday, September 4th and Sunday September 5th.  Vail Valley restaurants will offer specialty dishes in portions that allow you to taste and sample as you stroll through the Village.  Tents offering pairings of wine, beer and spirits will also be mixed in with the food tents.

Both Saturday, September 4th  and Sunday, September 5th, the tastings are open to the public from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.  Admission is free and includes the live Jazz music.

Grab a friend and come join me in celebrating the winding down of another wonderful summer in Vail at Vail’s Gourmet on the Gore.

2010 Vail International Dance Festival, Night 1

Tonight is the first performance of the 2010 Vail International Dance Festival, debuting with world-renowned performer Savion Glover along with legendary jazz musician Eddie Palmieri.  This will be Glover’s second consecutive trip to the Vail International Dance Festival, as he performed back-to-back last year.  He is a well decorated tap dancer that can please a crowd regardless of age.  His influences date back to the Vaudeville tap era and range to recent hip-hop.Entryway to the Ford Amphitheater

He has starred on the big screen as well as on Broadway, alongside legends such as Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis Jr.  In fact, Gregory Hines coined Savion Glover to be “the greatest tap dancer that ever lived.”  Many may know his work in the Oscar award-winning animated film “Happy Feet”, where he was co-choreographer for the character Mumble.  Last year he managed to sell out both shows; and certainly it will happen again.

Tickets are $17 for lawn seating, $55-$75 for reserved seats, and $10 for children.  This is a great substitute for the usual Tuesday Hot Summer Nights Series.  For more information about upcoming events and lodging in the Vail Valley, please visit our website at rockymountainvacationrentals.com, or by phone at (970)477-1777.
