The Snow Ball Music Festival has the powers of impressing me every day. It must be some magic wizard. Announcing artists daily keeps me intrigued, as if Bassnectar and Pretty Lights weren’t enough. The way the acts are being announced I think its genius and accidental, but all good things happen for a reason. I keep going to the website and social networks everyday to check on updates waiting for my mind to be blown, and they are doing a great job. As acts are still being signed, it is exciting to watch this wonderful idea grow daily.
On January 13, I was impressed again with the announcement of Brother Ali to the concert poster along with a few other announcements and the growth of free spaces on the poster! I saw Brother Ali opening for Bassnectar earlier this year, so it’s great to see them together again at the same festival. Brother Ali must enjoy the dance music. More spaces mean more acts and I thought 29 was a large amount, but now there are 44 spots on the line-up. With the addition of Brother Ali to the Snow Ball, I expect to see another act added to the line-up – Mimosa. He opened for Pretty Lights at Red Rocks this summer, and I recently saw him play a great show at Agave in Avon. I would love to see him again especially in a festival atmosphere.
I only have one problem with this: the third headliner. Who will it be? I have been waiting eagerly and I don’t want to wait anymore. I have heard rumors that DeadMau5 might be playing at the Snow Ball, but would he be the third headliner? I for one wouldn’t want that, but seems to be a good fit. I think the third headliner shouldn’t be electronic – a lot of genres are coming to the Snow Ball, and it would be healthy to have some diversity. I’d like to see a hip-hop act, like Atmosphere or maybe something old school. Whoever it may be, I’m sure everyone will be stoked regardless of who it is. I can’t wait to see.

As skiing goes, you could say Vail is world-class. World-class skiing, world-class riding, and most important for your comfort, world-class resorts. All around Vail, from the heart of Vail Village, to the adjacent Lionshead Village, to east and west Vail, luxury properties abound, but the talk of the town this season is The Sebastian. The Sebastian is Vail’s newly remodeled and refurbished hotel and residence club, opening officially this season. Originally the Vail Plaza Hotel and Club, the entire property has undergone a much unneeded yet simply marvelous renovation. As the Vail Plaza Hotel and Club, the property was known to be rich, inviting, and plush; everything you could want in luxury accommodations. Now, as The Sebastian, it’s everything you wanted and more.
Everywhere you turn in The Sebastian, you’ll find five-star amenities and services. Gather with family and friends in the Owner’s Lounge, crunch toast while scouring the newspaper in the library, or meet on the remodeled pool
terrace at the end of a day on the slopes. If it’s food you’re looking for, you never have to stray far. The Sebastian’s brand new Block 16 Restaurant offers world-class cuisine and an array of wine choices, stored in the center of the restaurant so that your choices are always at your fingertips. For food on the go, try Market, a café style restaurant with sandwiches and soups available on-the-go or to dine in. Just in time for après ski, The Sebastian’s Frost Bar is opening, with entrances from the hotel lobby and from the courtyard, for skiers and hotel stayers alike to enjoy a cocktail or a bite to eat after a long day on the slopes.
You deserve to be pampered on your vacation, so don’t miss out on the Bloom Spa.
All décor and treatments are Colorado-inspired, so you can be sure to leave feeling rustic and refreshed. A variety of services are offered, including massages, facials, soaks & body treatments. And for the days you want to work up a sweat off of the mountain, the Sebastian state-of-the-art fitness center is available for all your cardiovascular needs.
The Sebastian is fully appointed with resort rooms and fractional properties, all furbished with high-end décor.

Summer in Vail at the Teva Mountain Games:
The count-down is on! There are officially 40 days until the 2010 Teva Mountain Games. But if you’re not the athletic type, there are plenty of other things that will be going on to keep you entertained. Here are 5 awesome events and opportunities that will be at this year’s Teva Mountain Games!
1. Free Concerts! It may sound too good to be true, but I tell no lies! There will be two nights of free concerts at Checkpoint Charlie’s located in the Vail Village. The first concert is scheduled for Thursday, June 3 and the second concert is that Saturday, June 5. Both nights will feature various DJ’s and bands. Who exactly will be performing has not yet been determined so keep checking back to find out!
2. Parties! After a long day of watching or participating in these grueling athletic feats, take some time to relax and enjoy the nightlife here in Vail. The Teva Mountain Ball is on June 6 at 10 pm. Everyone is invited to dress up in the finest prom attire and dance the night away! Historically, this is the party that you do not want to miss! Also, the first annual C4 Waterman Sup and Subs party will feature the Outdoor Reels film screening and hold a luau. So, get your grass skirt ready and your tuxedo pressed because these parties will be EPIC!
3. Outdoor Reels! Film makers from across the nation will be showing their newest films on Friday, June 4. There will be a cash bar and a question and answer session after each showing. This will be a rare chance to really hear the inspiration behind these great films and have fun doing it!
4. Volunteer! If you want to get special access to the events but don’t want to pay for it, consider being a volunteer. Volunteers help make any event happen and give people an opportunity to be involved instead of just attend. You can apply to be a volunteer online at no cost!

With summer just behind some April clouds, I am excited to be outside as much as possible, including for eating! When I am not backpacking or hiking, I take a work break refuge by eating outside- almost any patio will do, but if you are looking for the best where you can still enjoy the Teva Mountain Games atmosphere, then don’t fret, I did an office poll of where the best places to snag a snack where sunglasses are required, and why. Here’s what we came up with:
Vendetta’s. Not only is this the best place to grab a late night snack, but Vendetta’s back patio catches some great late afternoon sun. Try a “Ray Jay’s Wave” pizza (Canadian bacon, green peppers, and pineapple) for a full summer effect.
Red Lion. Located in the heart of everything that is happening in Vail, get here early because the Red Lion always has a full patio. I recommend trying their dry, smoked ribs with a local Colorado brew… 1554 by New Belgium goes great with a burger, too!
La Bottega. Enjoy the northern Italian casual restaurant, and take a look at their lunch menu. Watch out! The sandwiches are very large, and make for a great split meal, and I haven’t found a better Meatball sub in all of Colorado! La Bottega’s patio is in Vail Village, and is one of the best spots for people watching.
The Marketplace. Across from La Bottega is the Marketplace that also includes the Tavern. Don’t want to stay for lunch? No problem, the Marketplace has a steady supply of fresh, organic meats, cheeses, and produce for you to create a personalized and healthy meal.
Big Bear Bistro. Located at the top of Bridge Street, Big Bear Bistro is the place to stop for breakfast! Featuring fresh, and locally roasted Vail Mountain Coffee, they make getting your travel group ready for a day of kayak, raft, climbing, and even canine competition viewing easy. My top recommendation: try their breakfast burrito, complete with Mike’s Finest Green Chile. Stop by in the afternoon, or call in- they do pickup as well as delivery in Vail Village.
Looking for a place to stay? Our office offers condos, private homes, and pet-friendly lodging!
As I sit here, leg in cast, looking forward to an almost 6 month recovery from a running injury, I have shifted my interest in the Teva Mountain Games from participating to watching. Yes, although I am ultimately bummed at not being able to run, bike, and raft with some of the world’s greatest athletes, I am still stoked to be a spectator at this outrageous event. If you are more interested in watching that participating in the Teva Mountain Games, than you should know which events are must-sees. Here are the Top 8 spectator events at the Teva Mountain Games!
1. Slopestyle: (When: Sunday, June 6. Qualifiers: 11am, Finals: 2pm) This freestyle competition at Golden Peak is one that I am most looking forward to. Freeriders will fly through the air performing stunning twists and flips over rugged terrain. Basically anything goes, and for these bikers, Vail is the ultimate playground! If you get fired up watching BMXers in the summer X games, don’t miss this! Plan on getting there a little early because lots of people turn out to watch this one!
2. Freestyle Kayaking: (When: Qualifiers: Friday, June 4 @ 1pm. Finals: Saturday June 5 @ 4:15 pm) The world’s best playboaters will throw down everything they’ve got to impress the judges and try to accumulate the most points in a one-minute timed run through Vail’s whitewater park. These competitors are hard core, and will stop at nothing to showboat their way to the top. If you plan on attending this or any other water event, consider staying in the Village so that you are in the heart of the action!
3. World cup bouldering: (When: Qualifiers Friday, June 4 @ 9am. Finals: Saturday, June 5 @ 3:45pm) This is a climbing event where some of the world’s best will scale an intense climbing wall set up in the heart of Vail Village. This is a captivating test of strength and agility that measures athletic endurance and desire. Make sure to wear your hiking boots to this event because you will be inspired to go out and do some climbing after watching this fully charged event.
4. Extreme kayaking: (When: Thursday, June 3. 9:30am Championship, 10am time trials) Homestake Creek became nationally known as the ultimate kayaking challenge in 2002. Since then, some of the world’s greatest Kayakers have traveled down this intense creek that drops 480 feet per mile. The rules are simple; whoever makes it through this quarter mile creek with the fastest time wins.
5. Free Ride Dual: (When: Saturday, June 5. Finals at 3 pm) This is an intense bike race taking place in the Vail Village that incorporates doable jumps, ramps and other obstacles. Bikers can reach over 8 feet in the air in this event!! This is a must see event and has been a crowd favorite for the past 2 years.
6. 8-ball: (When: Saturday, June 6. Qualifiers: 11:30am, Finals: 2:30pm) Kayakers will gather at the covered bridge for a 200 meter sprint through Vail’s narrow Gore Creek. Civil this event is not! On the contrary, these kayakers are water gladiators, clad in full body armor and pushing, shoving, and fighting their way through the course.
7. Raft paddlecross: (When: Sunday June 6. Qualifiers: 10am, Finals: 1:30pm) A two-person raft-race down Gore Creek that showcases speed, agility, and aggression. Teams will be placed into racing groups of three and go head to head in this 1/10 mile trek through Vail’s whitewater park. Teams will have to navigate through no less than two upstream gates. The best part? Ramming is allowed! Things are going to get intense!
8. X Country Bike Race: (When: Saturday, June 5. Pro’s and Experts ride at 11:45am) It is an uphill bike race that starts at the base of Golden Peak and winds up to the top of Vail Mountain along a brand new course. The race will be broken into three heats, the second of which will be for advanced and professional riders. If you are a biking enthusiast, don’t miss this chance to watch these athletes challenge themselves and each other in this Tour de France style race!

It’s actually not that hard- here’s a list of all the FREE things to do during Spring Back to Vail April 12-18, 2010.
1. Free concerts! The Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars are performing on April 16th at Checkpoint Charlie, from 6-10 pm in Vail Village. They will also be showing their documentary which tells the story of the bands’ long journey from the Sierra Leone and their experiences in various refugee camps.
2. Attend Après and “After Dark Parties” where you can snipe some freebies from Bud Light and Captain Morgan at bars throughout Vail Village and Lionshead. My favorites include the Red Lion, the George, and Samana Lounge.
3. Stop by the Men’s Journal Lounge and Reverb Eco Village with sponsors such as Bear Naked Granola and attendance by Stonyfield Farm and Sustainable Biodiesel Alliance. 8:30-3:30 at the base of the Vista Bahn lift near Vail Village.
4. FREE concert! Don’t miss Wyclef Jean on Saturday, April 17 and guest Robert Earl Keen. This concert, located at Ford Park is THE concert not to miss this Spring in Vail! This will be an unforgettable combination and night to remember! Get there early- this will be one packed show! Robert Earl Keen starts at 5 pm, followed by Wyclef at 7 pm. No floor space left at my place- too many friends are coming, but you can find some great lodging deals and catch some spring runs!
5. Free lunch and entertainment continues on Sunday with the Rockstar World Pond Skimming Championships. Located at Golden Peak on Vail Mountain, watch as crazy skiers glide across a somewhat (sarcasm) chilly pool of water. Many wear costumes, some land smoothly, but most crash epically into the water! They should find a hot chocolate and heater sponsor for this one! Or perhaps an arctic dive suit maker….
Free BBQ will be provided, and then to wrap up Spring Back to Vail 2010….
6. Another free concert! Located again at Checkpoint Charlie in the Vail Village, Guster, an “acoustic-pop threesome” that throws humor into their alternative rock show.
One thing is for certain- this is one heck of a way to finish the winter here in Vail- and I won’t forget to take as many late season runs as I can humanely accomplish while also soaking in some spring weather, great music, friends, food, and fun! Hopefully the family will visit and join too- each of these events would be great for my young cousins, aunts, and more!
I didn’t know what to expect for the annual Lamb Cook-off, a part of the Taste of Vail going on now, but I gave myself a pat on the back after attending with some co-workers and friends- every dish we tried were from Vail’s best chefs and was accompanied by some of the best wine I’ve tried. To top it all off, we had warm spring weather and I actually had to take my coat off!
The Vail Lamb cook-off had some tough competitors, but Restaurant Kelly Liken took the first place position with lamb confit created by sous chef Hunter Smith. Unfortunately I arrived late and didn’t make it to their tent in time, which is why next year I will plan to arrive early, which is my number one tip is to get there early! Here are my recommendations for next year:
1. Get there early if you intend to try many samples! Long lines are guaranteed to form at the Kelly Liken, La Tour, Lodge at Vail, and Ocotillo. (the Lodge at Vail took third place this year with their lamb pastrami sandwich, while Ocotillo took second with unforgettable lamb tamales)
2. Grab an office-mate, friend, mother, sister, brother, father or a ski group, then pair up and you can find and split the tastings. You will both get to experience more and spend less on tickets.
3. Be green by bringing your own fork and cloth napkin. Use the recycle containers that can be found every 40 feet along Gore Creek Drive.
4. Spend the $60 for all access! It is more than worth it, by purchasing an all access pass you may taste every restaurant’s submission, as well as sample every attending winery. If you purchased a ticket for every place, it would add up to over $150.
5. Walk to the event! Trust me, after all of this wonderful food, you will be grateful for the walk back to your hotel, condo, villa, or vehicle!
I hesitate to share this gem, but as the last few Street Beat concerts in Vail, Colorado near, I have to divulge.
Although the Street Beat concerts move around, the best location I have found is when they hold them at Solaris (a brand new hotel opening soon in the Village!). As with typical concerts, the audience area is roped off and secured so that people partaking in a tasty Bud Light beverage stay within the premises… which is fun but can add up if you find yourself very thirsty after a long day of skiing or boarding.
Here’s my insider tip:
Go buy your tasty beverage from Tavern at the Marketplace (located across the street from Solaris in the Vail Village!) Not only can you open a tab and pay less, but because the Marketplace owns the sidewalk up to the corner (which puts you 20 feet from the stage, in an open area where you and twenty of your closest friends fit comfortably). Not only are you allowed to bring your drink outside, but you will be closer to the stage than most concert attendees! Just don’t share this tip with too many people… I’d love to have enough space to meet you there!
Stay in a vacation rental, and walk back to your vacation home! Just remember to stay behind the fence and not to wonder off of their sidewalk.
Only two Bud Light Street Beat Concerts left:
• March 31- Public Pick
• April 14- Thriller DJ Logic
JAZZ MUSIC, the American invention that was conceived during the Harlem Renaissance, has an important place here in Vail. The Vail Jazz Festival, which begins June 27th and lasts until September 6th, will feature an array of performances and a variety of venues including Jazz at Farmer’s Market, Jazz at Vail Square, and topped off by the Labor Day Weekend Jazz Party. Last year’s Jazz Festival provided the town of Vail with extraordinary performances that left everyone wanting more. This year is sure to have the same level of fantastic entertainment in the cool mountain setting.

Henry Bulter: Performer at Vail Jazz Festival
To kick it all off, The Vail Farmer’s market will present 10 free concerts, scheduled every Sunday from noon until 3:30pm. Local and regionally-based talent will provide natural musical accompaniments to the fantastic shopping and amazing food that The Farmer’s Market is already famous for. This is summertime hot spot for locals and visitors alike with activities and entertainment that the whole family can enjoy!
The Vail Jazz Foundation has also planned a series of evening performances, Thursdays at the Vail Square in Lionshead starting August 5th and lasting until September 2nd. The sounds of Jazz will permeate the cool evening air at this venue which offers over 250 covered seats for attendees to sit and enjoy the fantastic music.
The icing on this jazzy cake is the 15th annual Labor Day Weekend Jazz Party from Thursday, September 2nd until Monday September 6th. This internationally acclaimed event will feature five days and nights of the world’s greatest jazz musicians. The event is hosted by the Vail Marriot Resort in Lionshead and will provide an intimate cabaret-style venue for these spectacular musicians to perform. Musicians are given creative license to engage in awesome jam sessions with other featured artists. You can’t miss this spectacular event! Tickets can be purchased through the Vail Jazz Foundation Office for $45/afternoon, $55/evening, and $350/event. For more information, you can call the Jazz Foundation at 970-479-6146 or you may order your tickets online, beginning in June at www.vailjazz.org.
Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals is extreemely excited about all of the upcomming summer events, including the Vail Jazz Festival. If you have any interest in music, I encourage you to look into planning a visit to Vail so that you may partake in this acclaimed event. The summer months are so fantastic here and the Vail Jazz Foundation really does a fantastic job at making this a top notch event!
I grew up in a family of five and can gratefully say that we had our share of family vacations; all of which were spent in a hotel. Twenty three years later my vacations have evolved from family time to group vacations with good friends.
This past weekend, myself and 12 friends rented a ski-in /ski-out vacation home in Breckenridge, CO. We arrived to find the home nestled high in the tress overlooking Breckenridge Mountain. The view was enough to make everyone want to stay longer…
As we toured the house I was pleased to find that the amenities of a hotel were still present in vacation rentals, plus some. I found that each bathroom was stocked with Aveda products, beautifully folded towels, laundry detergent was provided for the washer and dryer, and the house was stocked with plenty of comfortable blankets for everyone. I began to realize that this was the VIP experience, without the price!
One of the many advantages of a vacation rental vs. hotel stay is having a full kitchen to take advantage of. We didn’t waste any time to cook up a fest of steaks, tilapia, pasta, and veggies. Had we had gone to town and had such a wonderful meal; we would have been spending at minimum $25 a person. For less than $100 all 13 of us enjoyed a home cooked meal with leftovers to spare. Did I mention we weren’t spending $ 8 a cocktail?
Everyone seemed to agree that the back deck hot tub overlooking Breckenridge Mountain was the highlight of our vacation rental. After a day on the slopes, nothing felt better than skiing back to the house and jumping in the hot tub for a little relaxation. There was plenty to keep us occupied at the house; from the pool table, to board games, to just hanging out. It was such a good feeling to have the space and resources to spend time with one another, without that typical cooped up feeling that other accommodations give you. All groups should consider a renting a vacation home from Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals for their next holiday.
CSA
At Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals, we work with Property Management companies. This is because it takes the hassle out of managing Vacation Rentals for owners. Owners have vacation homes for one reason: to vacation in! With the Vacation Rental industry growing, reports are indicating that vacationers trust and have better experiences with vacation rentals that are managed by property management companies. Most vacation rental websites provide owner manuals that contain 26 pages. That is 26 pages of work that owners must complete on their own in order to get the most out of their listing. This is a lot of work for a home, condo, or apartment intended to give vacationers the chance to relax and rejuvenate.
Property management companies take care of all the details, while companies like Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals provide quality assurance, marketing, advertising, and remove the risk of booking directly with an owner. Property management companies will take care of housekeeping, maintenance, legal, and financial aspects of opening your vacation rental home to guests. Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals, whose base office is located in Vail, Colorado, utilizes a skilled, local, and very outgoing sales staff to ensure that the vacationer finds exactly what they are looking for at the best price and, most importantly, the guests AND the home owners get to ENJOY their vacations.
Families looking to plan their next vacation typically let one common denominator influence their decision on where and when to travel; price. These days it’s common for one to search Expedia or Hotels.com and take the quoted room rates at face value, book the hotel room and disregard what they have sacrificed for this booking. However, savvy vacation planners know that the buck doesn’t stop here and there are many things such as one’s health, the cost of food, privacy and the overall experience that comes into play when making a lodging decision.
Consider the trade-off of staying in a hotel room vs. renting a vacation rental from a reputed company such as Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals. For arguments sake, let’s say a family of five books lodging at a standard hotel room in Vail, CO for 5 nights at $249.00 a night. Without a proper kitchen, this family will be spending at minimum $200 a day eating out (remember we’re in Vail). So the real cost of their hotel stay is closer to $500 a day. This is a large price to pay considering the sacrifices that are being made to ones diet, only to be cramped into a small space, competing for the next spot in the bathroom. Fun.
The wise consumer, who opts to stay in a professionally managed vacation rental property, receives the benefit of a fully functional kitchen, space for each family member and uncompromising privacy for under $400 a night. One $200 trip to the grocery store and a family has enough food to enjoy home cooked meals all week long in an intimate setting. For once the primary goal of quality family time isn’t lost by crowded restaurants, temptations, and the hustle and bustle of a hotel.
Any health conscientious individual can quickly weight the consequences of eating out every meal for five days. Living well shouldn’t stop because one is on vacation; vacationers’ remorse doesn’t have to come into play once back to the “real world”.
This market is saturated with competitive pricing options for vacation lodgings. But what one can’t comprise is the how the choice of lodging is responsible for the overall experience of a destination. So my advice is weigh your options, what you want to get out of your holiday and talk to a local from Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals to get you exactly where you want to be.

Vail, CO is the perfect place to invest in a fractional residence, which is essentially a modern take on the (somewhat) outdated idea of the Timeshare. With deeded interests, properties that appreciate in value, and constant upkeep of the residence, fractional residences in Vail and Beaver Creek is a smart investment and a luxurious opportunity without the bother of a second-home mortgage. Fractional residences are the perfect match for both the high-end shopper who can’t afford to waste time on the maintenance of a whole-ownership property and the young earner who isn’t quite in the market for an entire home, but can afford the indulgence of a home away from home for a couple of weeks per year.
Our Fractional Residence of the week is the Park Hyatt Beaver Creek, where vacationers can partake in everything from skiing and ice skating to fine dining, spa time at the Allegria, and quality family time to recharge the batteries while simultaneously indulging in a luxurious retreat. The Residences at Park Hyatt Beaver Creek offer shared-ownership opportunities with six 3-bedroom and nine 2-bedroom residences ranging in size from 1,400 to 2,195 feet. Each include amenities of comfort and opulence, such as Admonter mocca maple wood flooring in the kitchen, living, and dining rooms, high-speed wireless internet access, Allegria Spa Gold Membership, Granite and marble slab countertops and stone flooring in the master and second baths, and air massage tubs in the master baths!
With lavishness like this, it’s no wonder why Vail and Beaver Creek are two of the most anticipated destinations for affluent vacationers. What’s an even greater indication that these resorts are some of the most desired resorts? Our clients keep coming back each year—throughout both the winter and summer seasons—to experience time and time again the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains with the comfort and ease of home.

Another premiere fractional residence can be found at One Willow Bridge, a beautiful destination in the heart of Vaill Village. For more information, check out www.vailonewillowbridge.com . We recommend speaking to our lodging specialists here at Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals before going directly to a hotel or property management company, because while their inventory is spectacular, it might not fit the exact needs of you and your family. If you have a couple of moments to sit down with us and tell us exactly what you’re looking for (price range, location, quality, etc), we will do the work for you, offering you multiple options that match your requests, along with a couple options that don’t, so you can see what your designated market looks like.
