There’s no place I’d rather be on the 4th of July than home, in Summit County, Colorado. It’s the perfect weather, with the temperature hovering around a 80 degrees, a lack of humidity and a light breeze create the best environment for a day of outdoor activities. This year my wife and I started our long weekend skiing at Arapahoe Basin – a great tradition after an amazing year of snowfall! A-Basin’s laid back atmosphere and beautiful alpine scenery make it an ideal location for celebrating any holiday. ‘The Beach’, A-Basin’s (in)famous parking lot, is great for grilling and adds to the festivities. After our summer ski and lunch, we headed back to Frisco for a lazy paddle with the kayaks on Lake Dillon. Exploring the islands of the lake via kayak is extremely peaceful, providing incredible views of the surrounding mountains from a unique vantage point. I recommend taking an afternoon and experiencing it for yourself.
The following day, we headed to Frisco’s Main Street for the 4th of July parade and green art festival. Summit County really goes all-out for their Independence Day activities and events. The parade highlights many local businesses, charities and youth groups. Our favorite part was getting hit with snowballs being thrown from one of the floats…in July! After the parade we headed to the Riverwalk Center in Breckenridge for a free afternoon concert in the park, headlined by Rusted Root. From our blanket on the lawn, we enjoyed the backdrop of Breckenridge Ski Resort while taking in the sun and dancing with our friends. To end our spectacular day of festivities, we enjoyed dinner, summer cocktails and live music at the Island Grill at The Frisco Marina. This is also an ideal location to watch Frisco’s amazing fireworks, as they shoot off over Lake Dillon. The display did not disappoint, as the fireworks can not only be seen high above but also in the reflections on the calm waters of the lake. It is not to be missed.
This all may sound too good to be true, but it is the reality of spending the 4th of July in Summit County. If you haven’t been here for Independence Day or the summertime in general, put it high on your list.
