Ozomatli is coming to Breck!

Breckenridge Colorado Live Music

Guess what!? This Sunday Ozomatli will be in Breckenridge playing for FREE! It’s spring time here in the valley and that means a lot of free concerts. We just finished a series of Bud Light concerts in Vail but wait it’s not completely over. Now the Bud Light concert series has moved on to Breck and they have a great line up: Wailers, Devotchka, and Ozomatli to name a few.

Being a huge Ozo fan I’m super excited about them performing here in Colorado and for FREE. This band is high energy all the time, I don’t remember ever going to one of their concerts (yes I’ve been to several) and not danced the whole time they’re on stage. People that get to see them for the first time get hooked and become Ozo fans instantly. At least that’s been my experience with the people I’ve taken to the concert with me.

A little about the band (some info from their website): Ozomatli is an LA-based group with a great live presence, brewing a vital concoction of Latin salsa, urban hip-hop, and jazz-funk. Notorious urban-Latino-and-beyond collision of hip hop and salsa, dancehall and cumbia, samba and funk, merengue and comparsa, East LA and New Orleans second line, Jamaican ragga and Indian raga— has long followed a key mantra: it will take you around the world by taking you around L.A. They were invited by the U.S. State Department to serve as official Cultural Ambassadors on a series of government-sponsored international tours to Asia, Africa, South America, and the Middle East, tours that linked Ozomatli to a tradition of cultural diplomacy that also includes the esteemed likes of Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and Louis Armstrong.

Ozomatli has spent 15 years working diligently to spread its message of peace, communication and understanding through music, with a long standing tradition of performing for children all over the world, from the schools of North St. Louis to the orphanages of Southeast Asia. 2011 has the band focused on “oZoKidZ”, a special family friendly set geared towards performing for children and adults alike. The band are currently in the studio with acclaimed producer Tony Berg, recording a children’s album for release in 2011, followed by a book, DVD and tour

21st Annual Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championship

Come to Breckenridge to watch and see how snow sculptures are created! 2011 will mark the 21st annual Budweiser Snow Sculpture Championship in Breckenridge. Sculpting begins at 11:00 am on Tuesday January 25th, 2011 with a gunshot to start and sculpting ends on Saturday January 29th, 2011 at 10:00 am. Artists begin their sculpting around the River Walk Center grounds at 150 West Adams Avenue, Breckenridge, CO.

Friday January 28th is supposed to be the best day to attend this free event. Artists are preparing to stay up all night to detail their work. This year there are 15 teams from eight countries including Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United States.

The snow for the sculptures is made by the Breckenridge Ski Resort and dumped into trucks to be taken down to the site. Once the snow is on site it is blown into blocks and volunteers called “snow stompers” climb on the piles and stomp the snow and then more snow is blown on top. The snow sculptures are approximately 20 tons and each team’s sculpture is 10 feet wide, 10 feet long, by 12 feet high.  To create these amazing sculptures the artists are only allowed to use hand tools and power tools are not allowed.

Judging beings at 10:00 am on Saturday January 29th, 2011 and the award ceremony is at 3:30 pm on Sunday January 30th, at this time there will be an award for People’s Choice, Kid’s Choice, and the judges will pick their top three choices.

Why not spend the entire weekend witnessing how the sculptures evolve? Come check out this awesome free event in Breckenridge. For your lodging conveniences contact your Friendly, Knowledgeable, Locals atRocky Mountain Vacation Rentals.

First Day Out of the Season!

This weekend was my first day on the mountain of the season! It could not have been a better weekend to get my legs warmed up and ready for the long season ahead.  Ready to get back into skiing I could not have been more excited to start in the Rockies.  Used to the east coast slopes that are full of ice and short runs it was quit a treat to start skiing out west.

Saturday I started out in Breckenridge anxious because I have skied Breck before and absolutely loved the great views, awesome slope bars, and mountain of course.  It could not have been a more perfect day to start.  Semi long lines starting at Peak 8, we moved our way over to Peak 9 where we skied most of the day.  Less crowded we got in a lot of runs, and although it hadn’t snowed in a few days it was a great to day be on mountain.   Sunny with blue skies my first day out this season could not have been any better!

With the snow starting to fall in the valley late Saturday night I knew that Sunday was going to be a great powder day.  Although tired after my first day out on the mountain my roommate graciously woke me up early to get a head start on the slopes. Still snowing in the morning, it was a cold yet awesome day!  We decided to hit up Beaver Creek, excited to check it out because I have never skied there before and I have only heard great things.

Beaver Creek did not disappoint. With fresh powder and the snow still coming down the conditions were great and the lines were short.  With my lack of experience skiing powder it was definitely a learning day for me.  I decided that I unquestionably need a new pair of goggles for the snowy conditions out in the Rockies.  Skiing fresh powder was so enjoyable and it felt like a completely different sport.  With great guides we navigated most of the mountain, which was awesome experiencing all the different runs that Beaver Creek had to offer. I am definitely excited to get more powder days in this season and improve!

I would have to say two of my favorite features of Beaver Creek were definitely the escalators at the lodge (best idea ever) and of course the complementary chocolate chip cookies (which were awesome) given out ever day around 3:00. Perfect ending to a great day on the mountain!

Come check out the great skiing in the Rockies! For lodging information contact your Friendly, Knowledgeable, Locals at Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals!

Weekend in Breck, Round 2

This past weekend, a group of us headed to Breckenridge for some R&R along with some partying. While I’ve been to Breckenridge before, it was amazing to see the various peaks covered in snow.  I moved out here from Long Island about six weeks ago, so to see snow this early really blew my mind. Everyone around me just laughed and told me “Welcome to Colorado.” It snowed on and off while we were in Breckenridge, which ended up turning into more of a partying trip then R&R. Breckenridge is such a great town and everyone is so friendly, from the locally owned Daylight Donuts to the various bartenders and cab drivers we met

throughout the weekend. Everyone needs to experience Breckenridge at some point, so why not do it now when the snow is starting to fall; it truly is a great time of year.

Hanging in Breckenridge

This weekend I made my first trip to Breckenridge with some friends. We were hanging out by the pool in Vail when we decided we should mix it up and head to our friend’s Breckenridge house. We stopped at the grocery store to pick up some food to grill and we were on our way. The drive alone was amazing; all the Aspens are bright yellow at this time in the season and make the mountains look like they are on fire. Once we arrived at the house we decided to head out on a nature walk. While we didn’t come across any wildlife, there were a few spots where we had to cross a stream on some makeshift bridges. After a while we were all pretty hungry and decided to head back to the house for some food.

Photo-Lake Dillon

The View Overlooking Lake Dillon

The night could not have been more perfect. After our delicious meal of pork, steak, and chicken we all grabbed some drinks and headed into the hot tub. If there is a better view of a mountain from a hot tub, I have yet to find it. We hung out in the hot tub all night gazing at the stars and the slopes directly in front of us. On the way out of Breckenridge we decided to stop at Daylight Donuts for breakfast. It was amazing; great prices, great service, and amazing food. I recommend stopping by whenever you are in Breckenridge. Our one friend who knew the area the best took us to a peak overlooking Dillon Reserve; the view was unbelievable. The chipmunks there are so tame that if you put some food in your hand they will literally walk right into your hand and take it.

Even though I spent less than 24 hours in Breckenridge, I had an amazing time and can’t wait to head back. To book your stay in Breckenridge make sure you call Rocky Mountain Vacation Rentals at 1.888.866.2305.  You won’t regret it.

2010 Winter Dew Tour

Dew Tour Kick Off Returns to Breck

Although the summer seems to have just barely ended, it’s never too early to start looking ahead to winter events in the mountains! For the third year running, Breckenridge will be hosting the kick-off to the Winter Dew Tour, owned and operated by Alli, The Alliance of Action Sports. The beginning events will take place in Breck December 17- 20, where top athletes will be competing in free skiing and snowboarding (slopestyle and superpipe).

Photo-Breckenridge Qualifier

Breckenridge is the ultimate location for Winter Qualifiers, hosting the Dew Tour & the X-Game Qualifiers.

Since December 2008, the Dew Tour has been one of the world’s premiere winter action sports tours. The tour will continue throughout the season, and move onto Killington, VT January 20-23, and then Ogden, UT, February 10-13. As the race intensifies, so will the size of the pipe, moving onto 22 foot superpipes at Killington and Snowbasin. Athletes will be competing for a piece of a $1.5 million prize, based on individual event performance and year-end standings. The winner with the most points overall will receive the Athlete of the Year award, which will be announced at the end of the tour in Snowbasin.

During the stop in Breckenridge, open qualifiers will compete to earn a spot in the tour. It should be a pretty exciting time to be up there, as competitions will be going on all day, with top world athletes participating in all events. Nights out on the town will be equally as exciting, as Breckenridge is known for its energetic night scene.

The Dew Tour is the largest media platform in all of winter action sports, and will be televised on NBC, USA, MTV, and MTV2 –- so if you stand close enough as a spectator, you might even make a presence on TV. Champions from 2009/2010 include Andrew Hatveit, Jossi Wells, Jamie Anderson, Sage Kotsenburg, Kaitlyn Farrington, and JJ Thomas.

Book your lodging for mid-December in Breckenridge, and experience the excitement of the Dew Tour kick-off in the animated town of Breck. More on Oktoberfest Month

Wednesday is officially the first day of September, and with the first month of Fall comes several occasions to celebrate the practice of beer drinking in the Rockies. In addition to Beaver Creek and Vail’s Oktoberfests right around the corner, Breckenridge will be celebrating their 16th Annual Oktoberfest September 17-19.

The tradition of beer drinking is something that I take pretty seriously.  The first evidence of a beer recipe was found on Babylonian clay tablets from over 6,000 years ago, and beer has since been embedded in culture around the globe. With the simple yet delightful ingredients of water, malted grain, the cannabis cousin hops, and yeast, many different styles of beer can be made by using more, less, or external ingredients of the above mentioned. It is possible to live off of beer (although I wouldn’t recommend it for the long term), and was used to treat illnesses in Egypt in 1600 B.C.

The celebration of Oktoberfest traces back to 1810, commemorating the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese in Munich, Germany. The wedding took place in October, and a great horse race was organized to accompany the celebration. In 1819, it was agreed that Oktoberfest was an annual event and continued to be celebrated throughout the 19th and 20th century. Celebrations in Munich today are the Mardi Gras of Germany, and Oktoberfest traditions can now be recognized anywhere, including the ski towns of Colorado.

Following Oktoberfest in Beaver Creek and Vail, Breckenridge will be featuring a Munich meets Breck weekend with traditional costume, dancing, keg-tapping and cuisine. The Brewmaster’s Dinner will be held Friday night, the 17th, and the first course out of six will begin at 6:00 pm. The cost to participate in this dining experience is $70 per person, or $130 per couple.  Saturday events include the Main Street Party from 11 am to 6 pm, and a 5k run to be held during the day. The event is pet-free due to extensive food and drink offerings, and the road will be blocked off for beer-drinking pedestrians. Volunteer opportunities are available if you are over 21 and want to be part of the work that goes into the festivities. Volunteers receive a free t-shirt and a choice of a meal or drink.

Stay tuned for upcoming events commemorating the tradition of Oktoberfest and imported and local beers in the Rockies. For more information regarding the festivities or to book a comfortable place to crash after drinking, check out our website or call 1-888-866-2305.

Breckenridge Past and Present

The town of Breckenridge is the most historic town in Colorado, established as a mining town in the summer of 1859 when gold was discovered along the Blue River.  Breckenridge continued to be a mining town until 1942 when World War II efforts required all metal to be melted down; visitors today can view where the development stopped at Maggie Pond, which is located at the base of Peak 9.  The halt of mining almost turned Breckenridge into a ghost town, with a minuscule population of 393 until a company from Wichita, Kansas issued a permit for a new ski area.  In December of 1961, Breckenridge was officially opened as a ski town with a recorded 17,000 visitors during its first season, despite having one chairlift and I-70 not yet being constructed.  Since its first season, Breckenridge has continuously flourished with production for the thousands of tourists who now visit every year.

Gold panning makes a comeback

Much of Colorado was built around boom towns. People came in search of fortune, they found gold and next thing you knew the once solitary site turned into a bustling town. Though some towns are now a distant memory, others have survived the test of time. Gold panning shaped Colorado’s history, and it is still practiced and celebrated to this day.

In 1859, a base camp was set up after gold was discovered along the Blue River. This base camp later evolved into the town of Breckenridge. The base camp is long gone, but the more than 350 historic structures still standing make Breckenridge the largest historic district in the state of Colorado. One of these structures is the Gold Pan Saloon, the oldest continuously operated bar west of the Mississippi dating back to 1859.

Breckenridge’s rich history makes it the ideal place for the Colorado Gold Panning Championship, coming July 30. Presented by the Gold Prospectors of Colorado, a 36-year-old organization for Colorado’s recreational gold prospectors, the state gold panning championships and the world dry-panning championships will take place during the two-day event. There will also be experts doing public demonstrations and giving pointers to those interested in learning about gold panning.

Although gold panning seems like a thing of the past for the now modern ski town, the championship will bring out those passionate about gold panning and those simply curious and fascinated by the activity that shaped so many towns. This will surely be an event like no other!

Kingdom Days of Breckenridge

The Outhouse Race. Photo by Carl Scofield.

This Father’s Day weekend, go to Breckenridge for some old-fashioned family fun. Kingdom Days will once again overrun the streets June 19 to June 20, celebrating 151 years of Breckenridge history. For a whole weekend, the town will return to its mining roots, commemorating the people and traditions of the past. The planned activities include mine tours, blacksmithing demos, historic site tours, gold panning, gun fights, old time photos, guided trail hikes and the crowd-favorite outhouse races. During the outhouse races, teams must pull and tug home-made outhouses across the finish line. The quirky themed outhouses made from all sorts of materials are as much fun to watch as are the people pulling them. This race is fast becoming a Breckenridge tradition and a must-see at the festival. There will also be live music and enough BBQ to give you a stomach ache. What better way to spend Father’s Day? Visit the event Web site for a full schedule of events.

Its Just about Hike and Bike Season

As it snows I’m thinking about all the bike and trail riding out there in the Vail Valley. Just two days ago, the beautiful weather brought out all the bikers soaking up the sun.  Today it rains and snow… For the roadies you should check out the Vail Pass Trail that is mostly paved and runs from Edwards all the way up Vail pass to Copper and Breckenridge.  The best part about riding the Vail Pass Trail is that it is far from the road, offering science views throughout.  Here are some good hiking and biking trails.

Trails.com has some great info on these and other trails, or you could always blaze your own!

And if you’re planning to come out for the Teva Mountain Games check out Venture Sports for bike rentals….  Two years ago at the Teva Games they had Giant Bikes available for Demo, Hopefully they do that again, Nothing like Riding a $4500 Dowhnill Bike around the Village, But be sure to abide by Municipal Ordinance  for dismounting your bicycle on stairs ;) even though the Giant Glory eats them up!

The Teva Mountain Games will take place in just two weeks! Colorado’s fickle weather always surprises….  I’ll just hope we have sunshine June 3-6, for the Teva Games and the Mud Run I’ll be competing in!

Family Reunions in the Colorado Rockies

Oh, family reunions. Loved by some, hated by others; either way often times unavoidable. For those who cringe at the sound of being surrounded by 50 of your relatives, I’m here to say consider yourself lucky.

A family reunion is a place you can often find out why you are the way you are, learn family history and form new bonds. Friends come and go, but in the end, your family will always be there.
Hosting a family reunion in the Colorado Rocky Mountains makes for a cost effective, exciting experience for everyone involved. I can’t think of a better place to spend time than in the mountains where you have the fresh air, space and nature at your fingertips.

Once the organizer has created a guest list and surveyed attendees they can start planning an unforgettable trip!  Families have the option to rent out multiple condos in the same complex, reserve a block of hotel rooms, or even rent a couple of private homes next door to one another.  It’s safe to generalize that most families that host their reunion in the mountains are here so they can take advantage of their surroundings by partaking in such activities as a BBQ by the lake, bike rides, group hikes, campfires at night and more.  Colorado’s National Forest lands offer the open space that you need for a family reunion.  Who wants to be crammed awkwardly in a hotel ballroom, when you could be hanging out at the lake all day, barbecuing, fishing, dancing and mingling.
In addition to the outdoorsy things, families can spend time together exploring neighboring historical towns, shopping, dining and just getting a feel for the local scene. I can promise you that spending a week in Vail, Steamboat, Aspen, Breckenridge, Telluride, or whatever destination you choose will make for beautiful memories. Rocky Mountain Group Travel is happy to arrange tours and activities, accommodations and fill you in on your destination!
